Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy claims he had a gun pointed at him Sunday while picking up his daughter from church, his office confirmed.
The suspect, reportedly identified as a 52-year-old woman, was arrested after the incident.
The South Carolina congressman's office confirmed the account but offered few details about the threat beyond thanking the police in Spartanburg, S.C., who assisted.
"Mr. Gowdy is grateful to the Spartanburg Public Safety Department for their help last night and especially for helping make sure his daughter was safe," spokesman Josh Dix said.
Politico, which first reported on the arrest, cited police as saying the suspect pointed a gun in Gowdy's direction and told him to "stop following her" while he was waiting for his daughter in the church parking lot. The congressman, after another encounter, reportedly put his car in reverse as the suspect tried to chase him on foot.
Gowdy reported the incident to police and was escorted back to pick up his daughter, according to the report.
Gowdy's office indicated Monday that the suspect would be prosecuted.
