The N.C. Central University drum line, part of the Marching Sound Machine Band, was suspended from all band performances and activities effective Sept. 10. An allegation of hazing is being investigated by the university.
Chancellor Becton emailed the NCCU community today with information about the hazing allegation.
“I want to inform you that the university is investigating an allegation of hazing related to the drum line of the Marching Sound Machine Band,” wrote Becton. “We are conducting a thorough investigation.”
The Marching Sound Machine Band performed at the Tournament of Roses Parade in 2011. The band is directed by NCCU music professor Jorim Reid.
Becton also wrote in his email that NCCU has a zero-tolerance policy regarding hazing.
NCCU formed a hazing task force in 2011 to review university guidelines. In the interest of ensuring the campus is free of hazing, a Committee on Hazing, Bullying and Student Harassment was then formed.
According to a statement released by NCCU public relations the hazing allegations are “specific to the drum line.”
The statement reads, in part, “The suspension prevents members of the drum line from participating in all band-related activities until further notice. The university is conducting the investigation.”
The NCCU student code of conduct prohibits hazing. Section 3.01 O, defines hazing as “Physically abusing or harassing another person or creating a situation which produces physical hurt or discomfort, severe emotional distress, embarrassment, or ridicule of another person.”
